Can’t Stop Drinking?

Twelve Questions Only You Can Answer

Only you can decide whether Alcoholics Anonymous is right for you. Below are twelve questions many of us asked ourselves. Take a moment to answer them honestly.

There is no shame in facing the truth. For many of us, these questions were the first step toward recovery.

  1. Have you ever decided to stop drinking for a week or so, but only lasted a couple of days?
  2. Do you wish people would mind their own business about your drinking—stop telling you what to do?
  3. Have you ever switched from one kind of drink to another in the hope it would keep you from getting drunk?
  4. Have you needed a drink when you woke up during the past year?
  5. Do you envy people who can drink without getting into trouble?
  6. Have you had problems connected with drinking during the past year?
  7. Has your drinking caused trouble at home?
  8. Do you ever try to get “extra” drinks at a party because you don’t feel like you’ve had enough?
  9. Do you tell yourself you can stop drinking anytime, even though you keep getting drunk when you don’t mean to?
  10. Have you missed days of work or school because of drinking?
  11. Do you ever have “blackouts” — times you can’t remember what happened while drinking?
  12. Have you ever felt your life would be better if you didn’t drink?

If you answered Yes to some of these questions, you may be struggling with a drinking problem. Remember: only you can decide if A.A. is right for you. If you think it might be, we’re here to help.

You’re Not Alone

No matter how many times you’ve tried to quit or how hopeless things may feel, you don’t have to do this alone. Thousands of people once felt the same way and found a new way of living through A.A. You can too — one day at a time.
